70% of cities in Cameroon are in slumps- Minister Ketcha

BY EMILIEN. E In celebration of World Habitat Day, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development Celestine Ketcha Courtes lamented on the precariousness of large Cameroon cities. Minister Ketcha Courtes, made this revelation over Cameroon Radio Television- CRTV on Monday, October Tuesday 4, 2021 that 70 % of big towns in Cameroon are in slumps.


“It’s just rather unfortunate but for us all to know how to handle the situation for a better urban life.”She added that, the Mayors of these cities should get more involved in organising the metropolis. “We all have a responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns “ She said.


The World Habitat Day which is celebrated every first Monday of October month every year was designated by the United Nations in 1985 Monday October 5, marked another edition of the World Habitat Day under the theme” Accelerating Urban Action for a Carbon- free World”.


With the first World Habitat Day celebrated in 1986, under the theme” Shelter is my right” . Where, Nairobi-Kenya been the host city for the observance that year. The idea of the World Habitat Day is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right to all to adequate shelter and as a reminder to the world that it is a collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.


According to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ketcha Courtes, she assures the public that the government is firm in it’s belief that the ugly face of the cities can be changed especially with the collaboration of all. She urged the public to be conscious of the little things that affect the cities especially, big ones like Douala with a lot of activities which is not good for a healthy city.


The renovation and Urban restructuring, she says is taking place at territorial levels. “It is left on the mayors to get involved now because climate change is a reality.” She reassured.
