Wotutu-Ewongo interquarter competition inspires hope and resilience

The 5th edition of the crowd-pulling launching of the Wotutu-Ewongo football festival kicked off on Sunday, June 22, 2025 at the Catholic School pitch in Wotutu, Buea Subdivision with an eye-catching game between Mami Dinga FC and Crystal FC to wet the appetite.
The opening match between Mami Dinga FC and Crystal FC ended goalless, despite a series of attempts from both teams during the first half and second half.
Mami Dinga FC and Crystal FC opening match marks the start of two-month thrilling tournament dubbed "Hope and Resilience Edition", which will pulled soccer lovers from far and wide to watch players of 8 teams in male category and players of the female category display talent in pool and eliminatory matches.
In Wotutu, the tournament has become an annual event organised by Edwin Eselem, a.k.a. EddyBobo, a SOBAN, MBA UB Graduate, author of "From Wotutu To The World", and Communication Specialist who worked for Orange Cameroon, but is now incharge of the Public Relations and Communication at The Basketball Africa League (BAL) since January 2022 in Dakar, Senegal.
According to Edwin Eselem, his vision is to use the convening power of sports and particularly football to preach peace and uplift the Wotutu-Ewongo community.
He added that the aim of the tournament is to promote social cohesion and peace in Wotutu and Ewongo, which is among many communities affected by the ongoing Anglophone Crisis.
“I am very excited and overwhelmed for a successful kickoff of the 5th edition of the Wotutu-Ewongo tournament.” Edwin Eselem said.
He added that he has plans to initiate opening of a football academy in Wotutu village which will empower the youths and serve as employment to many.
Quizzed on the renovation this year, he stressed on the fact that the major renovation is the partnership with Biaka Group and among others. Edwin Eselem revealed that the prize will still be maintained at FCFA 1 million.
“It’s something we started to use it as tool to preach peach and social cohesion and the fact that Wotutu has been badly affected by the ongoing Anglophone crisis.” Edwin Eselem said.
He added that the first, second, third and fourth editions show that they are increasingly attaining their objective given the number that has continued to grow over the last seasons.
In his intervention the Chief of Ewongo village
HRH Chief. Barrister Elive Esimboe Edward said he feels happy to see that the youths in his community fully engaged in the tournament.
“With activities like this it shows we are actually going out of the crisis..We pray all the youths should get themselves committed in activities like this and stay out of drugs” HRH Chief Elive Esimboe said.
The event was attended by MPs, SOBANS, lawyers, and friends of the cup donor Edwin Eselem, among others.
About Wotutu-Ewongo tournament
The Wotutu-Ewongo Football is an annual football competition bringing together the top football teams of the Wotutu-Ewongo villages in the Bonjongo court area during the holiday season.
The tournament was created out of the need to occupy the youth during their vacation but most importantly preach peace and social cohesion after the community was badly by the Anglophone crisis.
Now in its milestone fifth edition, the tournament uses the convening power of sports to change lives and uplift the community.
