World Cup 2022 at ‘risk’: Ballon d’Or winner, Karim Benzema ruled out

The Real Madrid striker’s Karim Benzema first full training session ended his World Cup dreams after he suffered an injury on Saturday November 19, 2022.

He was then brought in for a scan in Doha, which later confirmed a femoral rectus injury that will keep the 34-year-old out for three weeks.

A statement by the French national team on their social media accounts said: ‘Karim Benzema is forced to give up participating in the World Cup.

‘The whole team shares Karim’s sadness and wishes him a speedy recovery.’

Football observers are of the opinion that this year‘s World Cup is at ‘risk’ as prolific players like Karim Benzema of France, Sadio Mane of Senegal, Timon Wener of Germany, Georginio Wjnaldum of Netherlands, Diogo Jota of Portugal, Reece James of England, Jesus Tecatito of Mexico, Arthur Melo of Brazil, Giovani Locelso of Argentina and Amine Harit of Morocco won’t take part of the competition.

This is the latest setback for France who have already had prolific RB Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku ruled out after an injury in training.

The likes of Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Presnel Kimpembe and goalkeeper Mike Maignan were all unavailable for selection due to their own injuries.
