West Region: Governor Fonka halts Dschang cliff bridge project

Writer: Simon KallaSimon Kalla

The Governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustine, has halted construction of a temporary bridge near the Dschang cliff, citing extreme danger at the site of a deadly landslide.

He made this statement in a communique released on Wednesday March 5, 2025. The governor informed residents that the area remains "extremely" hazardous.

It should be noted that Dschang cliff was the site of a double landslide on November 5 last year, which killed approximately ten people. Public access has been prohibited since the tragedy.

The governor's statement outlined two reasons for the construction ban. First, he emphasized that any construction initiative in the area falls under the exclusive authority of the government. Awa Fonka Augustine stated,

“According to the latest information received from the Ministry of Public Works, the reconstruction of the area affected by the double landslide on November 5, 2024, at the Dschang cliff has been entrusted to the selected company, Cfhec." The statement indicated that work is scheduled to begin shortly.

Secondly, the governor cited the inherent danger of the site. He noted that recent meteorological forecasts from the National Observatory on Climate Change (Onacc) predict the imminent arrival of rainfall.

Heavy precipitation often increases the risk of landslides in the Western region, particularly at the Dschang cliff.

The governor urged residents to "exercise patience," and reiterated that "traffic between Santchou and Dschang is strictly prohibited for all types of vehicles until further notice."

A bypass route has been established to provide access to the cities of Dschang, Mbouda, and Bafoussam from Douala.
