Int’l Day of old persons: Victoria Gals Association commemorates in style

In African culture, the elderly have always been held in high esteem, and accorded special social status. They are a source of wisdom, influencing who we are, and who we aspire to be.

Victoria Gals Association Limbe, joined the world recently to commemorate the International Day of Older Persons. The Day which is commemorated every October 1, is a key opportunities to celebrate the lives of our senior citizens, while highlighting both the opportunities and the challenges that aging persons go through.

Welcoming dignitaries and members, President of Victoria Gals Limbe, Victoria Ndumbe regretted that they could not commence it on October 1, due to some circumstances. She opined that aging and aging with grace and dignity is a special grace from God. Ndumbe urged members to be thankful and praise God daily.

She explained that usually they meet on Mondays and Thursdays but due to the sociopolitical climate in North West and South West they only meet on Thursday.

“During our meetings, we sing hymns, meditate on the word of God, pray, have health talks, watch television, play games such as ludo, snakes and ladders, cards and sometimes go on excursions” Victoria Ndumbe explained. She opined that a longer life brings.


opportunities and provide the chance to pursue new activities such as further education, new career or a long neglected passion. “People in the society today see older persons as frail, but contrary to what many believe, older people also contribute in many ways to their families and communities,” Victoria Ndumbe said. She urged the elderly persons to change how they think, feel and act towards age and ageism, develop communities in ways that foster the abilities of older people. “We need more members to come and join our association, our doors are opened to register more members,” Ndumbe added. The Mayor for Limbe I Council, Eposi Florence Mbwaye urged the population to take as duty to hear and amplify the voices of the elderly in Limbe I Subdivision and to make sure that they live comfortable lifes in a conducive environment. It should be noted that, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2012-2030 the UN decade of Health Aging and the World Health Organisation was asked to lead the implementation of the four targeted areas.
