The University of Buea Centre for Drug Discovery Lab has been inaugurated. The inauguration of the lab took place Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at the UB Campus.

The inauguration was done by the Secretary General at the Ministry of Higher Education, Prof. Wilfred Nyongbet Gabsa, on behalf of Higher Education Boss, Jacques Fame Ndongo. This was in the presence of UB Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ngomo Horace Manga.

The building will serve as a training centre for researchers across Africa for educational, scientific, and professional advantages to individuals in the domain of drug discovery and the nation as a whole.

Speaking during the occasion, Prof. Gabsa appreciated the principal investigator, Professor Fidele Ntie-kang, for coming up with the initiative, which he said is vital to the higher education population.

“This is a scientific jewel that the higher education system has received," said Professor Wilfred Nyongbet Gabsa.

The structure is made up of five magnificent labs: the Natural Product lab, which focuses on bioprospecting extraction, isolation, and structured domination of natural products, Molecular Simulations Lab, where computer-based techniques will be used to suggest natural products. The structure, which is now operational, has been in existence for over three years now.

It was constructed to the sum of more than one million dollars (about FCFA 632 million) people in collaboration with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other partners to fight against diseases such as HIV, COVID-19, and malaria. "…the big one that was used to build the centre is $1 million.

Also receive now half a million dollars from the same donor," said Fidele Ntie-kang, the principal investigator of the Central Centre for Drug Discovery.
