Leaders of the Association of Teachers’ Trade Unions (COREC), which unites 19 teachers’ union associations, is accusing the government of delaying talks to grant teachers special status and has threatened to boycott the end-of-year exams.

COREC said in a statement that it will call on teachers “to refuse supervising the exams” to pressurise government back to the negotiating table.

Before now, the Communication Officer for COREC, Ntieche Njoya Dalatou laid emphasis on the need for a collective agreement for teachers in the private sector, among other demands.

It should be noted the dialogue started late in the first quarter of this year, with COREC presenting a draft special status to the government. According to the unionists, this draft will serve as the foundation for discussions with the government.

The draft now awaits review by the Ministry of Civil Service and Administrative Reform (MINFOPRA), which is expected to propose amendments. However, COREC insists that raising teachers’ salaries remains the top priority.

After MINFOPRA finalises the document, it must go to the President for approval. The government does not oppose the idea of a special status for teachers.

A trade union source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the issue would be discussed at the National Education Forum (FNE), date still to be announced. This forum aims to overhaul Cameroon’s education system and is eagerly awaited by the COREC.
