Four individuals alleged to be connected to the heinous attack and murder of commercial motorbike riders in Sikoum, a village in Dibamba, Sanaga Maritime division of the Littoral region, have been apprehended by the authorities.

The suspects, ranging in age from 31 to 42, were paraded before the media on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at the judicial police headquarters in Bonanjo, Douala.

Reenactment of Crimes

Following their presentation, the suspects were transported to Sikoum, where they led judicial police officers to four different sites within the bushes.

At these locations, they reenacted their crimes, providing a detailed account of their modus operandi. According to the gang leader, they would lure their victims by offering attractive prices for transportation from Douala to Sikoum.

Upon arrival, they would overpower their victims, drag them into the dense bush, tie them up using rubber, rob them of their valuables, and then flee with their motorbikes.

Gagging Victims

Roger, the gang leader, revealed that they would gag their victims to prevent them from shouting and raising an alarm that might attract the attention of villagers.

Mixed Reactions from Villagers

While the villagers in Sikoum expressed relief and happiness over the arrest, some requested the police to allow them to mete out jungle justice.

Other victims emphasized the importance of allowing the law to take its course, stressing that the suspects should not be released, lest they face dire consequences.

Fear of Farming

The rising incidence of violence and killings in the bushes of Sikoum has instilled fear among residents, particularly women, who are now hesitant to engage in farming activities due to the risk of falling victim to similar attacks.

Community-Led Security Initiatives

In response to the security concerns, the population, particularly landlords, have established a system to identify and gather information about their tenants, including their backgrounds. This initiative aims to enhance security and facilitate the identification of potential threats.

Additionally, vigilante groups have been formed, and motorbike riders have been enlisted to support the maintenance of peace and serenity in the area.

These community-led initiatives demonstrate the residents' commitment to taking proactive measures to ensure their safety and security.
