The Archbishop of Obala, Sosthene Leopold Bayemi, has been implicated in a sex scandal after appearing in a compromising video on Friday, August 22, 2025.
According to an amateur video that surfaced online, the Roman Catholic priest is allegedly seen making proposals supposedly to a woman encouraging her to record herself having sexual intercourse with another man or to engage in a threesome with one of her friends and another man, and then send the video to him.
KNews gathered that the prelate reportedly received messages on Wednesday, April 20, 2025, from unknown individuals claiming to possess scandalous videos of him and demanding a payment of FCFA 5 million within two days.
After ignoring these messages, the anonymous individuals mentioned a woman named Nadine, based in France, whose spiritual father is Father Bayemi. Following the advice of his lawyer, Father Bayemi plans to file a complaint against unknown persons for blackmail, extortion, invasion of privacy, and cybercrime.
In response, ANTIC and the police launched an investigation that led to the arrest of Mayemi Mayemi Paul Christian, who is said to be Nadine’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her child.
He claimed to have cloned his ex-girlfriend’s phone, discovering videos, audio recordings, and WhatsApp messages exchanged between her and the prelate.
Mayemi denies contacting the prelate for money and states that he destroyed the videos as soon as he realized the police were pursuing him.
However, he suspects that one of his friends, who is skilled with computers, may have created and shared the video to exert pressure and secure his release.
Statement from the Diocese of Obama
While the matter remains unclear, a terse statement from the Diocese of Obala on Saturday, August 23, 2025, on their official Facebook page did not provide sufficient information on the matter. The statement reads;
“Dear faithful, the diocese's communications department is aware of the recent circulation of videos concerning our bishop. Verifications are underway with the relevant authorities, and an official statement will be issued soon. Remain calm, do not give in to rumors, continue to follow the pastoral activities of our diocese, and let us remain united in prayer,"
