Cameroon legend Samuel Eto'o Fils has been elected president of the national football federation, FECAFOOT, on Saturday December 11, 2021 at Monte Fobe Hotel Yaounde.
Former indomitable striker Eto'o, who played for Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea, will take over the helm of FECAFOOT after grabbing 43 votes from members of FECAFOOT's general assembly. His rival, the current president Seydou Mbombouo Njoya, received 31 votes.
The body of FECAFOOT which has been characterised by infighting, mismanagement and allegations of corruption. Soccer's global governing body FIFA has intervened several times to end bickering among FECAFOOT officials.
Reacting shortly after the election Eto’o Twitted “I’ll be remembering today as one of the proudest moments of my life. I’m deeply grateful for to be elected as the new president of @FecafootOfficie.
“Every vote represents the energy and ambition of our football family to take our beloved sport to a level we’ve never seen before”.
The 40-year-old Eto'o Fils is Cameroonian retired professional footballer who played as a striker. In his prime, Eto'o was regarded by pundits as one of the best strikers in the world, and he is regarded as one of the greatest African players of all time, winning the African player of the year a record four times: in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2010.
Cameroon will host the African Cup of Nations from Jan. 9 to Feb. 6. It was stripped of the right to host the tournament in 2019 because of delays in preparation and security concerns.
