It was an exciting time for pupils, students, staff and parents of St Michael's Nursery, Primary and Secondary School and Happy Hearts Nursery and Primary School, as they marked their maiden Inter-House Sports feast at the Omni Sport Annexx Stadium in Limbe.
The one-day event, which was held as part of activities to mark the 'Youth Week and Bilingualism Day'' afforded learners the opportunity to display their undoubted natural talents, started with a colourful march past from the participating houses, comprising White Wolves, Red Dragons, Yellow Topaz Tigers, and Blue Birds proudly donning jerseys of their houses.
The four houses displayed coordinated and colourful performances with each house parading with cheerleaders, in line with inter-house sports tradition.
The competition featured many interesting activities such as sac race, 100m, brain box, sprint, tug of war, dressing game, egg and spoon race, football and dance competitions for learners segmented into junior and senior category, boys and girls.
Parents and staff were not left out of the fun and excitement as they also participated in the Tug of War and the Women's league among others.
Speaking at the end of activities for the day, the General Manager of St Michael's Nurser, Primary and Secondary School, Catherine Bih Tita Epse Baya said the institutions of learning take pride in sports, not only to showcase its sporting talents but unleash the giants within both recreation and fitness exercise.
" Today we are celebrating our first inter-house sports. Basically, the essence is to bring out the best and showcase sporting skills in the children and also to develop the spirit of collaboration, working together as a team and also to improve the spirit of sportsmanship.'
She noted that the event is key to the school's ideology of building complete children.
" They say all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy so we just try to do all that will make us have total children. These days, children don't do many things aside from using social media. We are inculcating the spirit of sportsmanship in them," Mme Baya said.
On the importance of Inter House Sports competition, she said: "It's a part of education as it builds pupils and students'esteem.
On his part, Penn Elvis, who is the Head Teacher of St Michael's Nursery and Primary School, said he was overwhelmed at the outstanding skills, strength and athletic display by the learners.
He commended the good sporting spirits and team work exhibited by the participating pupils and students.
"Sports is an important aspect in grooming children as it helps in bringing out their other talents as well as developing in them the spirit of teamwork,' he said.
He was highly elated and disclosed that sports is the only unifying factor that can bring people together for meaning purposes.
In the same vein, the Principal of St Michael's International College, Chia Oliver expressed satisfaction over the performance of the pupils and students stating that school places premium on three domains of education to develop well-rounded people.
" The children's performance was very impressive and their parents and staff are very happy. We believe in developing talents through the effective, cognitive and psychomotor domains in our teaching process,' he said.
Some of the parents charged the kids to imbibe the spirit of sports in their endeavors.
" Sports is one of the areas where you will meet people you might naturally not meet and this is one of the easiest ways to encourage children to get involved. Doing this will make them know that Rome was not built in a day; there is no barrier when you get involved in sports,'' Kedze said.
"Sports is very important in the lives of children and adults because it keeps you healthy and competitive, it even pushes you to achieve more in the other endeavours and I see the children are trying to put in their best."
One of the parents, Mme Fouda Solange, also highlighted the potential of producing future champions in the schools.
''Education and sports go together. Apart from exercising, it is now a career and this is where it begins," she said.
Other highlights of the 2026 SAMINUPSS Inter-House Sports Carnival included the vibrant cultural displays.
