The University of Buea (UB) Campus radio, Chariot FM, emitting on FM 93.5 in Buea, has begun using a partially upgraded technical room following the commencement of rehabilitation works.
Chariot Radio's new look is part of a project initiated by the Association of Student Journalists, University of Buea (ASJUB), to revamp the facility in line with its 30th anniversary celebration on June 13, 2025, under the theme "Journalism and Mass Communication in the Era of Digitization."
A presentation of the first phase of the Chariot FM revamp project took place on June 25, 2015.
The Head of Department for Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Buea, Dr. Nengieh Lizzie Wantchami, who oversees the unit as one of three labs under her establishment, expressed gratitude to the JMC 2001 batch and CAMASEJ Buea for providing a new broadcast desktop and window blind, respectively.
She explained that students, through this gesture, will have better hands-on training and acquire the needed skills before heading into the professional world. It must be noted that the purchases were cash contributions made on the occasion of ASJUB's 30th anniversary on June 13.
Dr. Lizzie said the revamping of the practical broadcast house will continue as they look forward to pledges made being redeemed and other batches taking up the challenge. The total rehabilitation is expected to cost no less than two million, of which one million has been pledged.
Speaking on behalf of the 2001 batch, Dr. Eng. Otto Enyame, who doubles as coordinator of Chariot Radio, said the gesture of his class was in response to an invitation extended to them by ASJUB. He commended the unity and solidarity that Dr. Nengieh had created to realise the project and expressed hope that other batches would come on board to make similar contributions.
The CAMASEJ Buea President, Andrew Nsoseka, noted delight in their modest contribution and highlighted the relationship that most of his members share with JMC as an alma mater. The new desktop is a Dell Core i5, 10th generation, with 8GB RAM, 1 terabyte of storage, and a 21-inch screen, costing FCFA 190,000.
The June 25 event was witnessed by the assistant station manager, Njukang Princely, JMC staff, and a host of current students. We have been informed that painting is due to begin in the days ahead inside the unit, sponsored by the University administration.
Chariot FM will be at the center of the unfoldings marking the Zone C games of the University Games, to be hosted by UB under the new Zonal University Championship (CHAZU) format. The games are expected to run from July 2-6, 2025.
