Blowing off another candle, Boris Karloff used it as an opportunity to reach out to a community away from his area of residence. Boris Kaloff, is station manager of the Christian Broadcasting Service (CBS) Radio Buea.
The humanitarian journalist, Boris Kaloff Batata felt fulfilled. He said the needs of the humanitarian stories he reports continue to inspire him towards giving out, to accompanying other stakeholders.
It should be noted that Batata has reached out severally to communities especially labourer settlements around Fako Division.
"I was inspired by the kind of stories, I tell. I, have covered stories in the Camps and, I understand the challenges the people are facing hence a humanitarian journalist, I thought it wise to take action and not just tell their stories," Boris-Kaloff Batata said.
According to the Camp Chairman, Ajang Thomas, it was a surprise for them and he was delighted by the gesture. "We were not expecting such an initiative," Thomas said, recalling that, "personal hygiene has been a major issue in our community, and this empowerment is going to better the hygiene condition of individuals, hence avoiding certain skin diseases."
In abit to promote the radio culture, radio sets were offered to many. They were told to listen often in order to be empowered with news of developments which may positively affect their lives.
Thematic reporting is growing progressively in the Cameroon media space. For the connection it has to community wellbeing, many tend to engage in humanitarian reporting.
Beyond just telling stories that directly affect and reflect community standards, some humanitarian journalists are taking gestures to meet the direct needs of needy people. Boris Kaloff Batata is one of such.
The community battles with low living standards, made complex by the ongoing socio-political unrest in the North West and South West regions which has caused a drop in CDC employment opportunities, irregular pay and high dependency.
“The knowledge gained on soap production will enable me to be financially independent," Mbinfast Elisabeth, a beneficiary explained.
