Internet access in Cameroon is significantly slow amid protests following the disputed irregularities of Sunday, October 12, presidential election. On Thursday, October 23, NetBlocks said, “We can confirm a significant, ongoing disruption to internet connectivity in Cameroon which may limit coverage of events on the ground.
NetBlocks notes that the outage coincides with the rising political unrest, suggesting an international effort to restrict information flow.
It should be noted that Cameroon's constitutional council on Wednesday threw out all petitions contesting the October 12 presidential election, clearing the way for full results to be announced.
Complaints soared on Thursday, October 23, from many Internet users complaining of extremely difficult access to the Internet network, while demonstrations demanding the victory of Issa Tchiroma Bakary were noted in certain localitie.
On Thursday evening, CAMTEL issued a communique which states, “CAMTEL) wishes to inform the public that a technical incident involving WACS cable equipment in Batoke (LIMBE) occurred in the early hours of October 23, 2025, causing internet connectivity disruptions throughout the country.
Thanks to the ongoing efforts of its technical teams and the mitigation measures implemented, service is gradually being restored in certain areas. Operations will continue until traffic is fully restored and secured.”
Earlier now, there have been rising tension by irate protesters accusing the regime of falsifying the results which led to street demonstration in Limbe, Dschang, Garoua, Douala among others cities.
President Paul Biya, the world's oldest ruler at 92, is seeking his 8th term in office despite opposition pushing for change.
With the final results expected to be announced on Monday, October 27, by the Constitutional Council, Cameroon faces renewed scrutiny from international partners and regional bodies over democratic credentials and handling of dissent.
