Pope Francis is set to be discharged from Rome's Gemelli hospital on Sunday, March 23, 2025, after spending over a month receiving treatment for a severe respiratory infection that resulted in double pneumonia.
His doctors have confirmed that he's no longer suffering from pneumonia and is now in a stable condition, although he's not yet completely healed.
The 88-year-old Pope experienced two critical episodes during his hospitalization, where his life was in danger, according to Dr. Sergio Alfieri, one of his treating physicians.
Despite this, Pope Francis was never intubated and remained alert and oriented throughout his treatment.
Before returning to his residence at the Vatican, Pope Francis will offer a blessing from his window at the Gemelli hospital on Sunday, marking his first public appearance since being admitted.
His doctors have indicated that he'll need at least two months of rest at the Vatican to fully recover.
It's worth noting that Pope Francis has a history of health issues, including having part of one of his lungs removed at age 21, which makes him more prone to infections.
Despite these challenges, he's continued to lead the Roman Catholic Church for nearly 12 years.
