Pope Francis' condition continues to improve, with the Vatican reporting that he no longer needs a mechanical ventilation mask to breathe.

This is a significant step forward in his recovery from double pneumonia.

The 88-year-old pontiff is also reducing his reliance on high-flow supplemental oxygen during the day, and his pneumonia infection is under control, although not completely eliminated.

A notable milestone in his recovery was concelebrating Mass on Wednesday, which marked the anniversary of his installation as pope 12 years ago.

Francis has been undergoing respiratory and physical therapy at Rome's Gemelli hospital since February 14 to strengthen his lungs.

The suspension of the ventilation mask indicates that his lungs are working better on their own.
