Barely 24 hours to the official lunching of Sunday, October 12, presidential election in Cameroon, Prof. Maurice Kamto has challenged failed consensus president Issa Tchiroma and his team to allow Cameroonians to free vote to their conscience.
“My dear compatriots,
“Despite the unfair and ignoble decision to reject my candidacy for the presidential election scheduled for next October, many Cameroonians continued to believe that I could still play an important role in the outcome of this election”,
“I thank them for their renewed esteem and unwavering trust. I have listened to their repeated appeals and resolved to see to what extent I could best respond, as is always the case when the greater good and the future of our country call upon me”,
“It was in this spirit that I launched, on September 16, an appeal to the opposition candidates running in the election in question”,
“I urged them to unite, ideally behind one of their own or, failing that, to form a coalition of several strong candidates around one of those among them who has extensive political and state management experience, in this case one of the two candidates from the northern part of the country, on the basis of a prior agreement between them. Such an approach was, in my opinion, likely to trigger a national popular dynamic,”
“It would have allowed the pooling of efforts and avoided the dispersion of votes, making the victory of the candidate supported by all the people of change, in other words all the Cameroonian people, inevitable”,
“Since that call, I have met and spoken with seven of the eleven opposition candidates , including the most prominent ones, as well as several civil society figures. I have spared no effort to encourage the achievement of an agreement between the UNDP and FSNC candidates, in order to make possible even a limited coalition of opposition candidates around them”,
This approach offered, in my view, a real chance of victory that would respond to the deep desire for change growing throughout the country.
“The late entry into the race for the office of President of the Republic of the two candidates from the Far North, whom public opinion seems to consider the major contenders in the upcoming election, did not give them the time for multifaceted preparation. This is essential if either of them hopes to create a dynamic of victory on their own”,
“Today, Friday, September 26, 2025, we are on the eve of the opening of the official electoral campaign period, during which a coalition candidate should be presented to voters and all Cameroonians across the country, their mission explained, and their face fixed in the minds of voters, especially in rural areas”,
“However, such a candidate could not be found at the Grandes Dames des Camerounais. It is therefore appropriate to make the following observation”,
“The absence of a coalition of candidates, even limited ones, with the two candidates from the Far North, capable of pooling resources and creating a powerful popular dynamic, capable of ensuring the victory of the people in the next presidential election.
“The existence of deep divisions within the population, particularly among supporters of the UNDP and FSNC candidates, as a result of the absence of an agreement on a single candidate among the two”,
“The prospect of a scattering of votes likely to seriously compromise the chances of victory of an opposition candidate”,
“As a result of all the above, we, Maurice Kamto and the Political Alliance for Change, who supported my candidacy, have come to the conclusion that it is appropriate to leave to each voter the full and entire responsibility to vote freely, in his soul and conscience, for the opposition candidate of his choice, during the presidential election scheduled for October 12, 2025”.
