The recent World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) observation in Kumba marked more than just a celebration of journalistic principles; it signaled the promising start of a new era for the Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ) Kumba chapter.
The event, the first public outing of the newly elected executive since assuming office on February 8th,2025 offered a refreshing glimpse into the chapter's future direction.
The absence of the Senior Civil Administrator or representative was notable, but in his stead, Mayor of Kumba 3, Dr. Mokwelle Isaac Nguba, stepped in, underscoring a vital shift: ( without the traditional suits during such occasions) a commitment to elected officials being truly accountable to the people, looking like the people.
This was reflected in the impressive turnout, a testament to the CAMASEJ executive's understanding of their responsibility to represent and serve their members.
Furthermore, the City Mayor Greg Mewanu's( without the traditional suits during occasions) simple act of praying over the meal, a first for such an event, spoke volumes about humility in public office.
His words, "Bless us oh Lord! And Bless this our meal...", resonated as a genuine expression of service and a refreshing departure from typical formalities.
Similarly, the chapter president's choice to forgo the traditional suit in favor of a more relaxed attire symbolized a break from rigid protocol, fostering a sense of approachability and connection with the membership.
The awards ceremony was also a success, with a wider range of pressmen recognized for their contributions, reflecting a commitment to acknowledging talent and dedication throughout the chapter.
The most catchy, an award to a business magnet " Chiben" for his manner of approach to costumers speaks volumes.
Perhaps the most significant takeaway was the event's inclusivity. The presence of representatives from diverse sectors – drivers, teachers, lawyers, and business persons( shockingly non in suits ) - underscored the media's essential role in serving the entire community.
This inclusivity was further emphasized by the unprecedented reimbursement of transportation costs for all attending members, demonstrating a tangible commitment to supporting its members.
These observations suggest a CAMASEJ Kumba chapter focused on humility, accountability, and inclusivity. This new executive seems poised to champion press freedom and journalistic excellence, but also to foster a more connected and supportive community.
The WPFD celebration was not just a success in itself, but a promising sign of a brighter future for journalism in Kumba.
