Dagobert Mwafo, 47, has been remanded to Kondengui Central Prison in Yaoundé following a provisional detention order issued by the Mfoundi High Court on May 27.

The judge charged Mwafo with the murder of six-year-old Mathis, who was killed on May 10 in the Ngoa Ekélé district of Yaoundé.

Mwafo will remain in prison until November 27, 2025, pending the start of his trial. Mwafo’s detention follows more than two weeks in custody at Yaoundé police station No. 5.

The case has drawn widespread attention and sparked public outcry in Cameroon. On the eve of Mwafo’s court appearance, several women demonstrated to protest the slow pace of the investigation and demand the death penalty for the accused.

Pauline Irène Nguene, Minister of Social Affairs, condemned the murder and visited the family of the deceased on May 15.

She expressed the government’s condolences and announced the immediate deployment of a team of social workers to provide psychosocial support to the child’s parents and relatives.

“We can’t erase the pain, but we want to tell this family that the Republic is at their side,” the minister said.

The incident began with an argument at a local bistro between Mathis’s father and the accused. Mwafo left the scene and returned with a dagger, which he used to fatally stab the child at the family’s home. Mwafo claimed he could not remember killing the 6-year-old child.

In a related development, Mwafo's daughter, Lydol, a prominent Cameroonian artist with international recognition, has expressed her profound sorrow over her father's actions.

In a video message, Lydol announced the postponement of her upcoming concert performance scheduled in Paris on June 7, 2025.
