The 2nd edition of the Meta Unity and Sports Tournament (MUST) has officially commenced in Mbengwi, marking a significant effort by local stakeholders to promote peace, unity, and community development through sports.

Launched on Saturday, July 5, 2025, under the auspices of Ndangoh Calvin’s Foundation, the tournament aims to serve as a unifying platform for the diverse villages within Meta.

In his opening remarks, Barrister Ntumfon Ndangoh Tah Calvin expressed pride in seeing his vision materialize for the 2nd consecutive year. He emphasized that football and other sports disciplines are powerful tools for fostering harmony among the people of Meta.

“Football is a unifying factor. I thought of how I could contribute my efforts to the peace, development, and prosperity of Mbengwi, and this tournament is my way of doing so,” he stated.

The promoter highlighted that the tournament is distinct from other local competitions because it is rooted in genuine love, peace, and community spirit. He reaffirmed that the initiative is apolitical and driven solely by a desire to bring people together.

“We use sports to unite, not divide. In sports, we count goals and points, not votes,” Barrister Ndangoh affirmed. The event drew a large crowd, including traditional dance groups whose vibrant performances added cultural richness, and clergy members whose prayers blessed the occasion.

The tournament also aims to revitalize the GBHS fields, transforming them into symbols of excellence and unity once again. This year’s edition introduces new disciplines such as girls’ football and boys’ handball, alongside a cross-country race.

The opening matches saw the girls of Bafmeng defeat Mbengwi girls 6-0, while the boys of Njembeng beat Abi Falls 5-1. It has already demonstrated its potential to generate excitement and community engagement, with 30 goals scored during the opening ceremony alone.

Barrister Ndangoh clarified that his motivation is purely for youth engagement and community development, not politics. “Football doesn’t know votes. It only knows goals. When the time for politics comes, we will play politics.

For now, I am doing this for the love of my people and the progress of Meta,” he explained. The tournament is budgeted at 5 million Francs CFA and will run until August 22, 2025.

The organizers hope that such initiatives will keep youth engaged, foster peace, and promote development across Meta’s villages, despite current challenges.

As the tournament continues, it promises to strengthen bonds among Meta’s residents, demonstrating that sports can be a powerful catalyst for unity and peace in times of crisis.
