The population of Foe Bakundu, Mbonge in Meme Division, South West Region are still in shock and consternation following the death of two brothers who died after consuming fried (jellof) rice purported to have been adulterated with pesticide recently.
According to Express FM 91.5, the older brother who was nicknamed, Ballaka, was given the pesticide, mucap, to keep by the mother, while she was going out.
At the time, Ballaka was cooking a pot of fried rice. After the food was prepared, he left to watch a football match in the local field in the area.
While there, he is reported to have invited one of the players to follow him home to partake in the meal before the match but the intervention of the coach prevented the player from accompanying him.
Ballaka left alone for the meal, and on getting home, he was joined by his younger brother just back from farm. He invited him to the meal which he did without hesitation.
Few minutes after they consumed the rice, the siblings went unconscious and later discovered dead. It remains unclear whether the older brother inadvertently cooked the rice with the pesticide or if it was introduced into it by another party.
The entire community of Foe and neighbouring villages have been thrown into grief and consternation as many are still in disbelief as to the actual cause of the tragedy.
