Lawyer Alice Nkom, a renowned human rights activist and defender of LGBTQ+ rights in Cameroon, is set to appear in court on April 7, 2025.
She is facing charges of breaking seals that were affixed to the doors of the Central Africa Human Rights Defenders Network (Redhac) headquarters in Douala.
The seals were reportedly "legally affixed" following the suspension of Redhac's activities by Paul Atanga Nji, the Minister of Territorial Administration, in December.
The suspension was allegedly due to the financing of terrorist networks. However, Nkom's attorney, Richard Tamfu, claims that she removed the seals because they were affixed illegally and she was acting in "self-defense.”
Nkom, who co-chairs Redhac's board of directors, has maintained that the seals were removed because the procedure for affixing them was not respected.
Her lawyer describes her as "a warrior with more than 50 years at the bar" who remains calm and composed despite the challenges she's facing.
It's worth noting that Nkom has a long history of advocating for human rights, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community in Cameroon.
She is the founder of the Association for the Defense of Homosexuals (ADEFHO) and has defended numerous clients prosecuted under Cameroon's anti-homosexuality laws
