Greg Mewanu : Kumba's Unlikely Peacemaker and Architect of Hope

Writer: Simon KallaSimon Kalla

The story of Greg (Gregory) Mewanu's rise to the office of Lord Mayor of Kumba is one of extraordinary circumstances, profound challenges, and ultimately, a testament to the power of compassionate leadership.

Elected in October 2020, on the CPDM ticket, Mewanu assumed office in the very heart of the Anglophone crisis, a time when Kumba was deeply scarred by violence, division, and despair.

Tragically, his tenure began in the shadow of unimaginable grief. Less than 72 hours after his election, the horrific attack on Mother Francisca

International Bilingual Academy in Fiango claimed the lives of innocent children, leaving an indelible mark on the city's collective psyche.

This horrific event became the catalyst for Mewanu's transformation from a politician to a compassionate leader, determined to heal Kumba's wounds and build a better future for its citizens.

From that moment forward, Mewanu embarked on a journey of kindness and reconciliation, winning the admiration of the common Kumba man and woman who had long yearned for change.

His four years in office have been nothing short of dramatic, marked by a series of initiatives aimed at fostering peace, unity, and development. Mewanu's vision for Kumba extends beyond politics.

Spearheading the Kumba City Interquarters Football Tournament, uniting youths from diverse backgrounds and fostering a sense of community spirit.

Breathing new life into the Kumba Amusement Park, providing a safe and enjoyable space for families and children.

Initiating ambitious projects to open up new streets, rehabilitate old roads, and redesign the Kumba Main Market, improving the city's infrastructure and boosting economic activity.

Tackling the City Council's inherited debt burden, demonstrating a commitment to sound financial management.

Launching a determined effort to combat corruption in the markets, challenging unscrupulous market masters and increasing internal revenue.

Introducing the "Operation Keep Quarters Clean for a Prize" program, incentivizing communities to take pride in their neighborhoods and improve sanitation.

Reuniting long-time enemies and adopting an open-door policy, ensuring that all citizens have access to his office and their concerns are heard. Regularly visiting orphanages in Kumba, demonstrating a genuine concern for the well-being of vulnerable children.

Promoting Kumba’s image

Actively promoting Kumba's image on the national and international stage, canvasing for support and partnerships and showcasing the city's beauty and potential.

Perhaps most remarkably, Mewanu's humility and dedication have earned Kumba a level of respect and attention it has rarely seen.

His external visits to seek support, his unwavering media presence showcasing the beauty of Kumba, and his fierce defense of the city's colors have set him apart from his predecessors.

No one before him has so actively championed Kumba's cause. Greg Mewanu's journey is a testament to the transformative power of leadership.

He stepped into the role of Lord Mayor at a time of unprecedented crisis, but instead of succumbing to despair, he chose to embrace hope, kindness, and a relentless commitment to serving the people of Kumba.

His story is an inspiration to us all and a reminder that even in the face of adversity, one person can make a profound difference. He is a symbol of hope to the people and a symbol of respect.
