Cameroon Gov’t denies Bakassi takeover by Nigerian armed separatists fraction

BY ATMNKENG EMILIENE

The Government of cameroon has denied the allegations of Nigerian armed forces taking over the Bakassi Peninsula of the country’s South West Region on Friday August 20, 2021, for the Cameroon soldiers are in control .

Reports say, the peninsula that was once disputed over by Cameroon and neighbouring Nigeria was for some moments taken over by armed men.

According to reports , the gunmen are of a Nigerian Seperatist faction . A group identified as the Biafra Nations League -BNL is reported to have confirmed it carried out the attack pulling down the Cameroon’s Flag.

According to reports quote from the Nigeria’s Daily Post Newspaper ,”We gathered that the action was carried out last night by militias loyal to the group following threats by BNL to remove billboards bearing the Republic of Cameroon.

However, it should be noted that the BNL had made threats weeks back after Cameroon and Nigerian envoys met to chart a way forward for bilateral cooperation in different sectors including security in the peninsula.

Hence, the hosting of the Biafran Flag on Cameroon territory was not possible .

Where report backs this act to say, security forces retaliated with gunshots.

KNews however, learnt that the administrative officer for Ndian Division in the South West Region has said the reports are false .

We further learnt that the Ndian Subdivisional Officer, SDO told South West Regional governor the reports are false and there is relatively calmness at the peninsula.

He added that, Cameroon’s Flag has not been carted away and the Rapid Intervention Battalion- BIR was maintaining peace in the peninsula as always.
