Dr. Esther Omam galvanises Limbe community dialogue after flood

What began as grief over a recent tragedy in Limbe has turned into a collective search for healing, resilience, and local solutions.

At the heart of the process is Dr. Esther Omam Njomo - International Development Expert, Global Peace Champion, Peacebuilder and Mediator - who convened a community dialogue on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the Limbe I Council Conference Hall, under the She Builds Peace Campaign, in collaboration with the Denis Miki Foundation.

Held under the theme "From Healing to Action: Building Local Solutions for Community Peace and Resilience," the dialogue brought together those most affected and those responsible for response: bereaved families, quarter heads, traditional and religious leaders, Limbe I Council authorities, humanitarian organizations, civil society actors, women peacebuilders, private sector representatives, and journalists.

The day opened with Healing Circles. In a safe and supportive space, affected families recounted stories of loss, survival, and the daily struggle that continues after the disaster.

"The discussions deliberately avoided blame," one facilitator noted. The focus was on restoring dignity, rebuilding community support systems, and finding practical ways to prevent future tragedies and respond better when they occur.

Participants examined concrete local gaps: early warning systems, disaster preparedness, risk prevention, public communication, and coordination among local actors.

Unlike many workshops that end with a list of recommendations, community and religious leaders, municipal authorities, humanitarians, women peacebuilders, and business owners were each asked to take ownership of specific actions - to ensure follow-up at quarter and council level.

The partnership with the Denis Miki Foundation ensured the conversation remained locally rooted, with residents' voices and priorities at the centre.

As a gesture of solidarity, aid kits were distributed to affected victims at the close of the event.

The media present also committed to amplifying messages of preparedness, prevention, solidarity and resilience across Limbe.

The initiative again underscored the critical role of women peacebuilders in crises - not only as caregivers, but as conveners who can bring divided voices together and turn pain into collective action.

Through the She Builds Peace Campaign, Dr. Omam and her partners are advocating for a stronger, more meaningful role for women in humanitarian response, peacebuilding, recovery and local decision-making.

The next phase, organizers say, will focus on tracking the commitments made and sustaining engagement with affected families.

The message from Limbe was clear: healing must lead to action, and recovery must be built with the community, not for it.
