A fire swept through the Ndogpassi market in Douala's third district earlier yesterday March 11, 2025, damaging or destroying between 15 and 25 shops, according to local officials.
Vincent Ngambou, the fourth deputy mayor of Douala III, confirmed that while there were no injuries or fatalities, the material losses were substantial.
"In terms of human life, no one died, no injuries. As for material losses, there are many," he told national radio.
Ngambou credited the prompt response of security forces, particularly the Douala III municipal police, for securing the area and preventing further damage.
"The municipal police of Douala III was on-site and was able to secure the perimeter to prevent some traders, in their panic, from venturing into the danger zone," he said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by authorities, who are seeking to determine the origin of the blaze, a recurring issue in Douala's markets.
The Ndogpassi market, a major commercial hub in Douala, is known for its diverse range of goods, attracting hundreds of traders and customers daily.
In 2022, the Douala III municipal government conducted an operation to clear sidewalks and public spaces, dismantling makeshift stalls and shops.
The operation, which involved burning illegal structures, aimed to reduce congestion and improve accessibility.
However, the measure proved temporary, with many traders continuing to operate in open spaces and on improvised counters.
