He remains a Legend and one of the most charismatic coastal chiefs Europeans would hardly forget. Chief Ekum'a Makundu nicknamed "Dick Merchant" was the fearless Chief of Dikolo, one of the main villages that make up Bimbia.
Bimbia history holds that he was feared by Spanish ships because he was a Pirate. But one fateful day, the Spanish decided to bomb Dikolo !What happened?
This story has been confirmed in the book "Bimbia As I Saw It" written by his great grand niece and first female English-speaking journalist of Cameroon, late Auntie Clara Yondo Tama.
Hear her: "Ekum’a Makundu who was my great grand uncle - Dikolo Chief told us that it was when Saker came with his Christian religion they stopped their slave trading.
He told us stories of how they caught some non-natives and sold them as slaves to the Spanish ships that came to Bimbia but never landed because they were afraid of the natives whom they termed “savages”.
He also told us how he used to be a Pirate and fought the Spanish people and took away their properties.
The Spanish people got furious and decided to bomb Dikolo - Bimbia. When the information reached the indigenes, they were advised to put very long poles with white pieces of cloth tied on them along the beach.
When the Spaniards came they were surprised to see the peace signal; some indigenes went to the sea to meet them and make a peace pact and promised never to worry them again." Remember the Legendary Chief Ekum'a Makundu of Dikolo Village, Bimbia.
