The case pitting the State of Cameroon and the founder and Chairman of Central African Rights Defenders Network (REDHAC) has been adjourned to Monday June 2, 2025 by the Bonanjo Court of First Instance.
Barrister Alice Nkom, appeared in court today along with REHAC’s Executive Director Maximilienne Ngo Mbe with a cream of legal minds namely; Presidential hopeful Barrister Akere Muna and others.
The postponement has raised questions about the future of REDHAC’s and its human rights work in Cameroon
Enter Genesis of the matter
Barrister, Alice Nkom a renowned human rights activist and defender of LGBTQ+ rights in Cameroon break the seals on the Central Africa Human Rights Defenders Network (REDHAC) headquarters in Douala.
The seals were affixed by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, who suspended REDHAC’s activities along with other civil society organisations, citing alleged ties to terrorist networks.
Nkom's defense Barrister, Richard Tamfu argues that she removed the seals in self-defense, claiming they were illegally affixed.
He added that Barrister, Nkom does not dispute removing the seals but believes she acted within her rights.
It should be noted that Minister Nji suspended REDHAC and other organizations, sparked concerns about government interference in human rights work.
