Cameroonian-born Lazare Eloundou is new Director of UNESCO World Heritage

The Director of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay has appointed Cameroonian born Lazare Eloundou Assomo as the new Director of World Heritage at UNESCO. He was appointed on Monday December 6, 2021. He becomes the first African to be at the helm of the prestigious World Heritage organisation.

53 years old graduate from the Grenoble school of Architecture, will have the huge challenge to coordinate activities around the 1,154 world Heritage Sites. As well as ensure that the African continent less represented be given more opportunities.

Eloundou had joined UNESCO in 2003 and contributed in the creation of a special fund for the coordination and restauration of some African heritage sites. Such as the forteresse site of llha in Mozambique, Mali and Uganda.


In 2013 to 2016, the Centre region descent was UNESCO bureau head in Bamako, and had as mission the rehabilitation of the Timbuktu mauslee destroyed by the Malian juhadists. Adding, to his rich career are numerous decorations at the international scenery, such as Malian Commander of national order of merit.


A lot of challenges await the new Director of UNESCO World Heritage, who since 2018 held the post of Director of Culture and Emergencies. This is already the opportunity to focus on several crucial projects: devastating conflicts, disasters and restitution of cultural property under the 1970 Convention.
