Cameroon’s political capital, Yaoundé now has its first state-of-the-art public restrooms. It was officially opened to the public recently marking the initial phase of a project aiming to construct 26 internationally standardised sanitation facilities.
Speaking during the event, Yaoundé City Mayor Luc Messi Atangana outlined the objectives of the initiative, stating that these modern facilities are intended to mitigate public sanitation issues.
He also highlighted the environmental benefits of the Biofill system, which helps prevent groundwater contamination.
This project is not the city's first foray into innovative sanitation solutions. In 2021, Yaoundé piloted ecological toilets near the former Mbalmayo train station, where waste was processed into natural fertilizer.
The initial rollout covers four key locations: Palais des Sports, Pharmacie du Soleil, the cathedral, and the Mokolo market.
These new public toilets boast a range of advanced features, including specialized accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
Utilizing an ecological Biofill system, the facilities offer natural waste treatment. Users can also access showers with both hot and cold water options, and all essential hygiene products are provided on-site.
Designed with user comfort in mind, the facilities feature natural ventilation and energy-efficient LED lighting. Non-slip flooring has been installed to enhance safety.
The restrooms are open to the public daily from 6:00 am to 11:00pm. A tiered pricing structure has been established for the various services.
Toilet fee is FCFA 100.
A cold shower is available for FCFA 500 while a hot shower costs FCFA 1,000. Towels and washcloths can be rented for 300 FCFA each.
Cross SARL, a local company, is responsible for the implementation of this ambitious project.
The success of these initial units will be crucial in determining the future expansion of the program across the capital city.
