Cameroon joins the International Community in observing the 139th International Labor Day today Thursday, May 1, 2025.
The theme selected for this year's commemoration is "Social Dialogue and decent work for a serious Cameroon.”
Speaking over Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV) on “Dimanche Midi” prelude to the International Labour Day commemoration, the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Gregoire Owona highlighted the recent discontent among teachers' unions advocating for improved working conditions, notably a salary increase. He reassured the workforce of better days ahead.
“Nevertheless, the government must, at all times and under all circumstances, listen and propose solutions to the issues raised." Minister Gregoire Owona added.
These demands are central to a proposed special status submitted to the government by union representatives in early April.
To amplify their demands, the unions have called for a week-long strike commencing at the start of the third academic term.
In response, the government has prioritised dialogue to maintain stability, according to Minister Owona's radio appearance.
He reported holding discussions with union leaders aimed at reaching a collective agreement to enhance working conditions for teachers in the private sector.
The Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reform Joseph Le is also involved and will be tasked with mediating to achieve a mutually agreeable special status.
Looking ahead, Owona cautioned that new social demands could surface in the coming months. "We are in an election year, a period often conducive to a resurgence of demands, whether justified or not," he explained.
