Cameroon debunks payment of HIV, TB and Malaria services

Writer: Simon KallaSimon Kalla

The Ministry of Public Health has reassured citizens that HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria treatments remain free of charge, despite rumors suggesting otherwise.

This assurance is contained in a press release issued by the Minister of Public Health, Manaouda Malachie on Friday, March 14, 2025.

This clarification comes after concerns were raised due to the temporary suspension of American international funding.

However, the government has stepped in to ensure uninterrupted services for these essential health programs.

To further alleviate concerns, the U.S. Government has granted exemptions to support the government's efforts.

Additionally, the Ministry of Public Health is advancing its Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda to strengthen the sustainability of priority health programs.

Citizens are encouraged to report any unauthorized charges for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, or malaria services to the relevant authorities.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that all Cameroonians receive essential healthcare services without financial burden.

It should be noted that the Minister of Public Health, Malachie Manaouda, in a circular dated Tuesday, February 4, 2025 called for measures to maintain essential health services in the country after the U.S. government temporarily suspended humanitarian aid.

According to the circular addressed to regional public health delegates, hospital directors, and the country's technical and financial partners, Manaouda emphasised continued provision of prevention, care, and treatment for HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria.

KNews gathered that U.S. government's 90-day suspension, effective January 21, is part of a strategic reassessment of priorities under the Trump administration which might be uplifted in April 2025.
