Due to repeated violence perpetrated on their members by the police and gendarmes, the Cameroon Bar Association has announced a three days nationwide strike that begins today March 5, 2025.
The information is contained in a press release signed on March 3, by Batonnier Mbah Eric Mbah, president of the Cameroon Bar Association.
According to the release the straw that broke the Camel’s back, leading to their decision is the circulation of videos on social media showing police officers physically assaulting an advocate and other civilians.
That wasn’t the only incident, as the Bar Council was equally informed of another advocate who was unlawfully detained and pressured to retract statements condemning human rights violations.
The Bar Council’s protest is not only a call for justice but also a demand for better protection of lawyers in the execution of their duties, as they insist that lawyers must be able to exercise their profession without fear of intimidation, violence, or repression.
Their strike action include; suspending the wearing of robes and boycotting courts for three days which they hope will draw attention to the urgent need for reforms and accountability in the justice system.
The suspension will automatically end after March 7, 2025, without further formalities.
This move of the Cameron Bar Association shows their solidarity and the need to protect their own, as well as preserve the image of the legal profession that seems to have been robbed in the mud.
It is expected that after this action, normalcy will return and lawyers won’t be stripped of their rights, nor brutalised by the police, but will be respected.
