Members of the Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ) Limbe/Tiko chapter on Saturday, September 20, 2025, in Limbe deepened their knowledge on election reporting in the build-up to the presidential election on Sunday, October 12, 2025, in Cameroon.

The workshop was tagged, the United Nations Human Rights (UNHR) Restitution Workshop on Rights-Based Approach to Elections Reporting.

Journalists were trained journalists on topics like responsible Journalism in Electoral Context Safety and Security for Journalists in Elections Reporting, the Basics of Human Rights and Elections, wherein journalists were called upon to uphold the values of the profession like accuracy and truthfulness, impartiality and fairness, transparency, respect for electoral laws, the do no harm policy, professional preparedness, conflict sensitive reporting, ethical conduct, countering misinformation amongst others;

Speaking during the workshop, the Divisional Delegate of Communication for Fako Division, Carine Ngoueli Minkaranko epse Viang, congratulated CAMASEJ Limbe/Tiko Chapter for organising the timely workshop.

She opined that the journalists have been equipped to carry out their activities during the upcoming presidential election. "My greatest expectation is that journalists should be responsible and preach inclusivity in their reporting during the election”,

“So, everyone should feel concerned and listened to," Carine Ngoueli said. She added that security forces would be available for the safety of journalists during the election.

The Managing Editor/CEO of The SUN Newspaper, Wasso Norbert Binde, expressed satisfaction with the training and urged journalists to be concise.

"Let's leave our opinions aside and give voice to the candidates. Also, let's not give them a platform to come and spill anything that is not realistic. For the incumbent, he has to give us a balance sheet of what he has accomplished so far," Wasso Norbert said.

He urged journalists to confront candidates with the worries of the population and to be objective, balanced, and fair in the way they treat and disseminate information.

Wasso Norbert told journalists to stay clear of making comments or taking sides in their reports. In her intervention, CAMASEJ Limbe/Tiko Chapter President, Zita Alliah Awah, expressed joy with the turnout of journalists during the workshop, which she opined was an eloquent testimony that they are eager to change the narrative.

"I know that we're going to make a difference this year, and we shall be recognised. So, they should watch out for what the journalists of Limbe/Tiko are coming up with, and we're going to report professionally and ethically," she said.

She added that this maiden edition of the new regime's workshop would transform journalists in Limbe to be great again.

Zita Alliah and her executive promised to hold subsequent workshops in the days ahead to empower their members.

It should be noted that the workshop was done with technical and material support from the United Nations Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa, who also offered free copies of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to participants.
