The bishops of Cameroon have appointed Bishop Andrew Nkea, Metropolitan Archbishop of Bamenda, as the new Grand Chancellor of the Catholic University of Central Africa (UCAC).
In a letter from the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon to Bishop Bertrand Guy Richard Appora Ngalanibe, President of ACERAC, it was announced that Bishop Nkea replaces Bishop Jean Mbarga of Yaoundé who has been relieved of the duties.
According to sources, the appointment followed consultations and a vote by the bishops, with Bishop Nkea securing 13 votes out of 19 votes cast.
Role of the Grand Chancellor
The Grand Chancellor of UCAC is the guarantor of the institution’s Catholic identity. Elected by ACERAC and confirmed by the Vatican, he acts similarly to a chairman of a board of directors.

He serve as liaison between the university, the founding bishops, and the Holy See. Ensuring that teaching and university life respect the faith, doctrine, and morals of the Catholic Church. Representing the university to regional ecclesiastical bodies and the Vatican.
Chairing the university’s governing board and overseeing its overall direction in collaboration with the Rector and supporting the institution’s development, regional integration in Central Africa, and academic excellence.
Background
Traditionally, the Grand Chancellor of UCAC has been the Metropolitan Archbishop of Yaounde.
The appointment is made through consultation and election by bishops who are members of ACERAC the Association of Episcopal Conferences of the Central African Region the university’s founder.
The list includes bishops from Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Chad. The Vatican then gives canonical approval and institutional recognition to the appointment.
