Renowned human rights activist and defender of LGBTQ+ rights in Cameroon, Alice Nkom is set to appear in Douala-Bonanjo Court of First Instance today Monday, April 7, 2025 over seal removal incident KNews earlier reported.

She's facing charges for breaking seals on the Central Africa Human Rights Defenders Network (REDHAC) headquarters in Douala.

The seals were affixed by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, who suspended REDHAC’s activities along with other civil society organizations, citing alleged ties to terrorist networks.

Nkom's defense argues that she removed the seals in self-defense, claiming they were illegally affixed.

Her lawyer, Richard Tamfu, stated that Nkom doesn't dispute removing the seals but believes she acted within her rights. With over 50 years of experience as a lawyer, Nkom remains resolute, according to Tamfu.

Barrister, Richard Tamfu describes her as "a warrior with more than 50 years at the bar" who remains calm and composed despite the challenges she's facing.

The controversy began when Minister Nji suspended REDHAC and other organizations, sparking concerns about government interference in human rights work. Nkom's court appearance today is a significant development in this ongoing saga.
