The Archbishop of Garoua, Faustin Ambassa Ndjodo, has confirmed that Father Valentin Mbaibarem, parish priest of St. John the Baptist Church in Madingring, remains in captivity.
The priest was kidnapped on May 7, 2025, on the road between Guidjiba and Tcholliré. According to the Archbishop, the kidnappers have been contacting locals to demand ransom for Father Mbaibarem's release.
The prelate described the Guidjiba-Tcholliré road as a "dangerous stretch" prone to kidnappings, with this being the first instance of a priest being targeted.
Northern Cameroon has long been plagued by kidnappings, with several incidents reported in recent weeks.
In a related development, gendarmes launched a search operation in the area, which led to the release of hostages kidnapped on May 10 in a village near Garoua.
In a show of solidarity, the Archbishop has called on parishes within the archdiocese to offer special prayers for Father Mbaibarem's safe release.
He has also invoked the intercession of the Virgin Mary for the priest's speedy return.
