Ahead of decentralisation day, Limbe I Mayor takes over 10 couples out of “come we stay”

Over 10 couples in Limbe I Municipality have legalized their union in a free mass marriage organized by the Mayor of Limbe I Council, Mbwaye Eposi Florence.

The ceremony took place on Friday, August 7, 2026 at the Limbe I Council Hall Bota, as part of activities marking the 2026 Decentralization Day celebrations.

Addressing the couples, Mayor Mbwaye Eposi urged them to stand by each other in both good and bad times, to tolerate and forgive one another, maintain dialogue, and above all pray together.

The Council boss also admonished women who are more financially capable than their husbands not to disrespect them, but to pool resources together for the growth of the family.

She reminded them that marriage comes with trials, stressing that "marriage is not a bed of roses."

Eradicating “come we stay”

The Mayor, who was recently commended by councillors, quarter heads and the population of Limbe I for her development strides, said one of her objectives as a female Mayor is to eradicate "come we stay" and reconcile families. 

She noted that the Council organizes free mass marriages twice every year on March 8 and mid-December to achieve that goal. This, she said, aligns with the spirit of Decentralization Day of strengthening families as the foundation of sustainable communities. 

The initiative was applauded by the Second Deputy Mayor of Limbe I Council, who called on other couples still in informal unions to seize the opportunity and enjoy the benefits of legal marriage, including access to council social services. 

The newly wedded couples expressed gratitude to the Mayor, noting that the mass marriage is a clear example of how Decentralization Day is being used in Limbe I to bring governance closer to the people and address social issues directly. 

They said the event reflects the true spirit of August 10 empowering local councils to promote community well-being and sustainable development.

Decentralization Day is commemorated every August 10 in Cameroon to highlight the transfer of powers and resources from the central government to councils and regions. 

The day is used by councils to showcase local development achievements, promote citizen participation, and bring public services closer to the people. 

This year’s theme focuses on "Decentralization for Sustainable Local Development and Community Well-being."
