The Minister of Public Health, Malachie Manaouda, in a circular dated Tuesday, February 4, 2025 has called for measures to maintain essential health services in the country after the U.S. government temporarily suspended humanitarian aid.

According to the circular addressed to regional public health delegates, hospital directors, and the country's technical and financial partners, Manaouda did not disclose the reasons for the temporary suspension, but emphasised continued provision of prevention, care, and treatment for HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria.

It should be noted that the U.S. government's 90-day suspension, effective Tuesday January 21, 2025 is part of a strategic reassessment of priorities under the Donald Trump administration which might be uplifted in April 2025.

Minister Manaouda's circular emphasized the need for uninterrupted services at all affiliated sites and community-based organizations, CBOs, throughout the suspension and until the situation is resolved, with a focus on vulnerable populations.

United States of America, USA, is a major donor to Cameroon’s health sector, particularly in the fight against HIV/AIDS. U.S. Ambassador to Cameroon Christopher J. Lamora said last year that the U.S. government had invested FCFA 617.5 billion ($1 billion) in health and humanitarian aid in the country over the past 20 years.
