For too long, the journalistic landscape in Kumba, a region acutely sensitive to the socio-political currents of Southwest Cameroon, was fractured.
At least 4 years of dispersed views, simmering resentments, and corrosive suspicion (hate) have left a profession that should be united in its pursuit of truth fragmented and vulnerable.
But, as the saying goes, even the darkest night gives way to dawn, on Friday, March 14, 2025 a new dawn broke for CAMASEJ Kumba. One month after the Nzaih Bweh Parrh-led team assumed office, something remarkable is happening.
Despite the deep-seated divisions that have plagued the profession, a significant number–two dozen and more–of English-speaking journalists answered the call to attend the first General Assembly of the rejuvenated CAMASEJ chapter in K town.
This turnout alone spoke volumes, signaling a yearning for unity and a willingness to set aside past grievances in the pursuit of a common cause.
The assembly served as a launchpad for the celebration of World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, a date that carries particular significance.
The discussions and objectives outlined by the new CAMASEJ team provide clear direction for relevant themes focused on rebuilding trust, ethical practice, and community-focused journalism).
Committees were swiftly established, igniting preparations for what promises to be a powerful demonstration of solidarity and a commitment to upholding journalistic principles.
Leading the charge, President Nzaih Bweh Parrh delivered a powerful message, emphasizing the urgent need for unity, togetherness, and unwavering integrity among all journalists moving forward.
His words resonated deeply, striking a chord with those who have long felt the debilitating effects of division and mistrust. But this is not just about words; it is about action.
In a remarkably short period, the new CAMASEJ team has demonstrably injected a renewed sense of purpose and professionalism into the association. Several noteworthy initiatives have already been implemented:
Transparent Communication: Information is now dispensed with order and clarity, ensuring that all members are kept informed and engaged.
Financial Transparency: The association's financial accounts have been opened for scrutiny, fostering trust and accountability.
Ethical Guidance: An ethics team, comprised of seasoned journalists known for their wisdom and integrity, has been established to provide guidance and ensure ethical conduct within the profession.
Day of Remembrance: A poignant new tradition, "Day of Fame," has been instituted every May 2, to honor and remember members who have passed on, a powerful symbol of the enduring bonds of the journalistic community.
These actions speak volumes about the new leadership's commitment to building a stronger, more united, and more ethical CAMASEJ in Kumba.
The initiatives are not merely cosmetic; they are concrete steps towards rebuilding trust, fostering collaboration, and upholding the highest standards of journalistic practice.
Friday, March 14th, was more than just a meeting; it was a turning point. It was a demonstration of hope, a testament to the enduring power of unity, and a bold step towards reclaiming the integrity and credibility of journalism in Kumba.
While challenges undoubtedly remain, the renewed energy and commitment of the new CAMASEJ team offer a glimmer of hope that the future of journalism in this politically sensitive region can be brighter, more united, and more dedicated to serving the truth.
"...We urge all journalists in Kumba, regardless of their past experiences or affiliations, to join this vital movement and contribute to building a stronger, more resilient, and more ethical journalistic community..." Says SG Tamfu Ciduan. The journey of four years, has just taken the first step.
