All roads in Fako Division lead to the catholic school field, Wotutu in Buea Subdivision today, Sunday, July 5, 2026, for the kick-off of the 6th edition of the Wotutu-Ewongo holiday football tourney.
The Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00pm, with the CEO of Biaka Group billed to perform the ceremonial kick-off.
The tournament’s promoter, Edwin Eselem, told journalists during a pre-tournament press conference on Saturday, July 4, 2026, that this year’s edition “promises to be bigger, better and brighter.”
Tournament born out of crisis
Eselem said he launched the tournament in 2021 to help dispel fear and restore peace to the Wotutu-Ewongo community following the Anglophone Crisis.
According to him, the community, once known for tomato, watermelon and vegetable farming, was turned into a hideout by separatist fighters.
This attracted military operations and left residents living in fear. “That’s how I decided to institute the Wotutu-Ewongo Football Jamboree as a tool to help dispel fear and usher back peace and harmony to the community,” he said.
Five years on, Eselem said the initiative has yielded results. “The fear many harboured before about Wotutu has gone. Peace, serenity and an atmosphere of camaraderie, solidarity and building back Wotutu and Ewongo together has returned.
This, thanks largely to the football tournament which has been playing the role of a peace and unifier.”
Partners and community impact
Eselem thanked partners including Orange Cameroun, Biaka University, Vista Print Co. Ltd, Image Nation, and New Vision for their support over the past 5 years.
He also appreciated media personalities like Prof. Che Tita, Dinga George, Tarhyang Tabe, Dean Mongo, and Municipal Updates CEO for backing the vision. Beyond football, the tournament has extended to education.
Last year, 50 scholarships were awarded to pupils and students in the community. Eselem said with more sponsors this year, the initiative hopes to reach even more beneficiaries.
He called on residents of Limbe, Buea, Tiko and across Fako to come out and support the opening match at 1:00PM at the Catholic School Field, Wotutu.
