Ahead of October 2025 presidential poll, ELECAM is ramping up efforts to ensure that accurate information prevails in Cameroon.

The independent electoral body is working on an internal system to track and counter fake news during the current pre-campaign period and the official campaign to follow.

However, the project is still in development. “We are working on it, but it’s not operational yet,” an Elecam official admitted. The exact nature of this system remains unclear, but one confirmed initiative is a dedicated Facebook page for fact-checking.

Initially scheduled to go live this week, its launch has been delayed due to technical issues. “Our technician is working on it,” said Erik Essousse adding that it should be ready in a matter of days.

While waiting for the page to go live, “ELECAM teams are fully engaged in monitoring,” the official stated. In the coming days, this monitoring effort will focus on identifying misinformation and providing fact-based corrections on the upcoming Facebook page.

Additional tools to fight fake news could emerge in the coming months. In the meantime, Elecam has another weapon in its arsenal: Fréquence Elecam, a radio program broadcast in both French and English.

The February 18 episode was dedicated to disinformation, highlighting how false narratives distort facts.
