The President of the Cameroon Association of Media Professionals (CAMP) Solomon Agborem has urged journalists to think, verify information before they click to share. He made this clarion call on Thursday October 8, 2021 in Buea during a workshop on fact-checking, data journalism in crisis and Covi-19.
The workshop which was organised by CAMP, European Union, through UNESCO was aimed to sharpen the skills of Journalists, Communications, bloggers and users of other social media platforms precision especially on misinformation surrounding the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The workshop was based on information dissemination and access for development, promoting democracy and good governance , national capacity building, promoting community health, cultural preservation, fight against social injustice, mainstreaming gender and poverty alleviation.
CAMP's President, Solomon Agborem encourages the participants at the workshop to be determined to learn something new, challenge themselves to be different so that they can stand out amongst those who are outstanding because after this workshop they will be become the new breed of fact-checkers on information relating to data Journalism and Covid-19 response.
“This marks the first in a series of similar workshops to take place in two other regions. North West and Littoral grouping 20 Journalist in each of the session as CAMP is present in Seven(7)out of the ten-10 region in Cameroon”, Solomon Agborem said.
He reassured that, credibility goes beyond a news organs. “It takes the effort and professionalism of the Journalist to treat disinformation and to say the least false news especially at this time when information is being manipulated day-in-day-out, at a time when the public is in dire need to make inform choices, this workshop is timely” Solomon said.
Solomon Agborem extended his gratitude to CAMP in collaboration with UNESCO the organisers of the workshop and its funder the European Union.
The resource person at the workshop, health worker and freelance journalist with data camerooon Maikem Emmanuela dwelled on a paper captioned “Fake News, Infodemic, misinformation and in the context of Covid-19.
She explained what fake news is all about as well as misinformation and disinformation, some common threats of misinformation and disinformation in the context of Covid-19. How to identify the two as regards as the circulation of false information online.
The Cameroon Association of Media Professionals-CAMP was created on December 10, 2005 legalised with registration number 20/G37/G14/VOL8 /T/BAPP in conformity with article 7 of law number 90/12/1990 relating to the formation and functioning of associations in Cameroon.
CAMP is specialised in the effective use of information and Communication Technology for education, global.
The Executive Director of CAMP, Tarhyang Enowbikah appreciated the European Union and UNESCO for believing in the CAMP dream.
The Project continues on the of October 14, with two trainings simultaneously, in Bamenda for Journalists in the West, North West and for Journalists in the Littoral, Centre and Grand North.
The South West Regional Coordinator of CAMP, Yuh Innocent; said “the project seeks to build a strong network of Fact Checkers in Crisis and Covid response, share best practices and experiences in different regions on the thematic and ensure effective and positive communication as far as the Covid-19 Pandemic is concerned.
Speaking to Simon Kalla at the end of the workshop, he said, “The workshop was really enriching, I think I’m empowered to fact-check fake Covid-19 information online and crisis stories”
