The mortal remains of the students and teacher killed in a school in Ekondo Titi, South West Region were laid to rest on Thursday, December 23, 2021.
The mortal remains of the deceased were removed from the Limbe Regional Hospital mortuary on Thursday, with last respects paid during an ecumenical service presided over by the Minister Secondary Education, Prof. Lyonga Nalova.
Three students and a teacher were killed on November 24, 2021 when armed men launched an attack on Government Bilingual High School, GBHS Ekondo Titi.
Speaking during the event, the Governor of the South West Region Bernard Okalia Bilai condemned the act and said the attackers won’t go on punished. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their dear ones wishes quick recovery to the survivors in the hospital.
In her welcome statement the Mayor for Limbe I council Mbwaye Florence Eposi said eduction is the fundamental human rights of every child and if it is not respected, it constitutes a serious violation of international human rights law. “The entire community of Limbe I municipality is deeply sadden on this act on schoolchildren and teacher.” She added. The mayor however urged the two Anglophone regions to pursue peace at all course to avoid killing their own children. She extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
Meanwhile the Mayor for Ekondo-Titi Nanji Kenneth pleaded with the government to take adequate measures so that such act does not happen again. He lamented that many people have lost their lives. He challenged parents to send their children to school come January 3, 2021 while urging the government to urgently build a fence for the safety of other children.
On his part, Ndian MP, Hon. Njume Peter lamented that a lot of atrocities have been committed in Ekondo-Titi, the killing of the Chief, abduction of seven government officials whose whereabouts is yet to be known. He questioned why Ekondo-Titi has been the center of the crisis of North West and South West Region.
He applauded the government for what they have been doing to reinstate peace in the North West and South West. He urged the government to tar the Ekondo-Titi Kumba road which cuts across other parts of the region.
The Minister of Secondary Education, Prof. Nalova Lyonga urged everyone to be our brother’s keepers and not killers. She insisted that the country must develop insisting that the minority can not dictate what the country will be. She gave them special decorations, a move described as a “symbol of the sympathy of the entire nation.”
“We have to be truthful to ourselves, we have to clean the history of this country, peace is what we need, let’s try and bring the peace we much deserve,” she added.
