Limbe City Council first deputy Mayor succors over 400 schoolchildren with didactics

The First Deputy City Mayor of the Limbe City Council, Mrs. Karen Nora Muto Tanga, has empowered over 400 crisis-affected and vulnerable children with back-to-school didactics which comprises of bags, pens pencils, rulers, sharpens, pads among others worth over FCFA 6 million.

The initiative, which comes as part of activities marking her 40th birthday celebrated last week, saw children from suburbs across Limbe receive school materials to return to school on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Romis event center Bota.

Speaking to reporters, Mrs. Muto Tanga said the outreach was motivated by the burden of seeing children stay out of school for years due to the crisis.

“After the crisis, a lot of our children have not been able to go to school. The foundation of every child is education. I decided that instead of just eating and drinking for my birthday, I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to invest in the lives of children because that is what will stay even when you’re gone. That is the legacy I want to leave behind,” she stated.

She explained that she deliberately refused personal gifts and accolades and asked that all support be channeled towards sending children back to school.

As a mother of the city, she said the project was not limited to Limbe III but covered children across Limbe, because she belongs to every child.

According to her, the selection was done through field visits. Working with quarter heads, teachers, and mothers, her team identified children who have not been to school for the past five to six years and verified their situations on the ground.

Beyond education, the Deputy Mayor, who is also an advocate for the girl child, used the occasion to decry rising cases of rape and femicide.

“As a mother, as a philanthropist, as an entrepreneur, my heart bleeds for what is happening to our girl children and boy children. We see rape cases every day, women being killed by men. As an advocate, I cannot just sit and say nothing. This happens every day around us, live and direct,” she said.

She called on men, fathers, and brothers to speak out against rape and femicide, noting that some contributions for the outreach also came from the diaspora.

“If men come up and speak against these atrocities, perpetrators will not hide anymore. Cases will reduce and our children will be safe. That is the society I believe we should live in.”

She expressed gratitude to all who contributed through prayers, cash, and materials, stating that their support has restored hope for a generation that was thought to be lost.

To the beneficiaries, she urged them to seize the opportunity.

“Make a difference with your life. When you have this opportunity, take it with both hands and run with it. When you do, you don’t just change your family, you change the nation.”

The back-to-school outreach has been widely praised by parents and community leaders in Limbe as timely and impactful.
