Limbe bids farewell to late Chief Alami Ekane of Mokindi Village

The mortal remains of HRH Chief Alami Ekane Nganje Fabian was laid to rest on Saturday February 18, 2023 at his palace in Isokolo (Mokindi Village) in Limbe II Subdivision. Relatives friends and a multitude of sympathisers from Limbe and beyond wept uncontrollably for the fallen hero.


In his homily drawn from Luke 23:33, 39-46 the Parish Priest of St. Patrick Parish Ngeme Rev. Michael Agbecha told mourners to live their live worthy of their calling as Christians and be ready to meet their creator whenever he comes knocking. He called on mourners to continue to pray for the late Chief Alami Ekane for God to grant him eternal rest in heaven.


Speaking during the funeral, the Divisional Officer for Limbe II Subdivision Serge Meke Albert described the late Chief Alami Ekane as a peacemaker, one who ruled with wisdom and was admired by many.


He added that late Chief Ekane always placed the interest of his population at the forefront living his personal interest behind. He called on other Chiefs to emulate the example of the deceased he was hardly seen in court for land disputes talk less of his subjects dragging him to court and equally on social media criticizing the government.


Serge Meke told the royal family to remain in peace and avoid any form of fighting while looking for rightful successor to replace him.


Prince Alami Ekane Emmanuel pleaded with the family to stay peaceful and mourn their father and grandfather for at least one or two years before thinking about the throne. He pleaded with the Administration to handle the Chieftaincy stool with a lot of serenity.


“I’ll never forget my late father. I was his handbag. He took me round the world. His absence is a big vacuum to me. I don’t know how I’m going to replace him” Prince Alami Ekane said in tears.


Biography of HRH Chief Alami Ekane


HRH Chief Alami Ekane Nganje Fabian was born on August 15th 1939 in Mokindi village to Late Chief ALAMI EKANE EMMANUEL and late Ma. Nanyongo A. Ndima Catherine Nee Alami. He was the third child in the family of six (06) all of them of blessed memory.

He started his primary education at the Roman Catholic Mission School Bota in 1949 and finished Standard Six in 1955 where he obtained his Standard Six Certificate. HRH Chief Alami as a young boy after primary school, the young Alami Ekane engaged himself into serious fishing an activity he was doing while schooling. He also loved hunting and had many dogs.


He did not further his education due to lack of means. He also learned carpentry and was giving one hour 30 minutes daily to practice at the now lone economic Centre in Gardens Victoria. Alami Ekane as a worker in 1956, young Alami Ekane obtained employment with Victoria Rural Council where he worked for one year as a Messenger.


He came back to assist his father to collect poll taxes. He also worked in PWD Victoria in the Mechanical Workshop. Due to low wages he left PWD and joined CDC mariners where he worked as a floating staff and was promoted to the rank of an able seaman.


In 1961 he joined Powercam Company where he worked as a Power Station Operator in Bota from 1961 to 1972 and was later transferred to Mankon Bamenda where he had the opportunity on 28th March, 1972 to switch on electricity in Bamenda town. In 1975, Powercam was changed to Sonel and despite the massive redundancy which occurred, he was retained and transferred back to Bota.


In the same year, precisely on 23rd August, 1975 his father died. On 10th August, 1986 he was transferred to Nkambe in Donga Mantung Division North West Province by the time. In 1988 he worked in Mundemba And Ekondo Titi.


Finally in 1988 he was transferred to Bota where he finally retired from active service. Alami Ekane as Chief After retiring in 1988, that same year his brother died and the village sat and nominated him as the next Chief to head the Mokindi village and in 1999 he became the third Chief of Mokindi village.


On 5th December, 1999 he was crowned as the Chief of Mokindi. He was the treasurer of the Fako Chiefs, the treasurer of the Limbe Chiefs, one time President of the Limbe Chiefs. Adviser No. 2 of Limbe Chief Conference Customary Court, Judge in Batoke Customary Court where he retired in 2019.


He was decorated during his working life with the following medals; silver, silver and gold medals by SONEL. Ultimately, he was awarded with Cameroon Order of Merit by the Head of State.


HRH Chief Alami Ekane left behind one wife, three Children, grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, relatives and friends to mourn him.
